Local author writes book for baby boomers

Nanoose artist known for his top-selling guide books

Nanoose author and artist Theo Dombrowski may be best known for his top-selling guide books. Many will know his series of five books to the ‘secret beaches’ of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. These initial successes have been followed up by walking guides to Vancouver Island. And now the author has turned his writing skills to a new format and subject.

New to Kindle eBooks on Amazon is Dombrowski’s latest book, Getting the Full Scoop: When Baby Boomers Retire.

According to Amazon “the book collects anecdotes, conversations, e-mail letters, and personal stories from a cast of colourful characters and groups them around topics that matter to the newly retired baby boomer. What happens to our sense of financial security, our relationships with our family members, our concerns with health? How do we feel about leaving a job that has mattered a lot to us?

What kinds of resolutions — and, sometimes, anxieties — affect our smooth sailing through retirement?”

Asked why undertake this writing project, Dombrowski said: “It’s all about writing something that will be fun to read, but also satisfying for the light it sheds on the views and experiences of this generation.”

An even stronger incentive for the local writer is to raise funds for humanitarian work. All of his profits from the guide books have gone to Médecins Sans Frontières for emergency relief work.

“This amazing organization, largely composed of medically trained volunteers, does a lot to relieve suffering and prevent disease.  Through donating profits from my books, I hope I can help their crucial work,” he said.

As for choosing to publish this book electronically, Dombrowski said he sees some real advantages.

Not only can publishing be instantaneous, he points out, rather than requiring the usual years’ waiting period, but also the profits generated by the $1 cost to the public are just as large as those generated by an expensive paper version.  He also points out that even those who don’t have a Kindle reader can get the book onto their computers or tablets almost instantly by downloading a free “ap” provided on the Kindle site.

Interested in having a look?  Simply go to Kindle books on the Amazon site and search for the author’s name. You’ll find a full description of the book, as well as part of a chapter that can be previewed.
