Musically talented students at Chemainus’ elementary and secondary schools could be in for nationwide attention if they win the CBC Music Class Challenge.
The competition encourages schools to submit a video or MP4 of one of the 16 pre-selected songs.
Both local schools selected Shawn Mendes’ Stiches.
The thirty public elementary school students (Grades 5 to 7) took a creative twist by using acoustic guitars and ukuleles in addition to vocals.
“Their sense of timing is unbelievable,” said music teacher Anna Steininger.
Students rehearsed every Wednesday for five weeks before recording the video.
“The kids have super strong rhythm skills and I thought that stood out in the video as well,” she added.
The competition now has Steininger considering forming an after school program next year for students to continuing applying what they learn in the classroom.
“They put their heart and soul into it and I think they did fantastic,” she said.
The results will be announced Dec. 16.
