Like the Agatha Christie mystery it’s based on, the latest play from Nanaimo Theatre Group stands the test of time.
The community theatre company is telling the story of Something’s Afoot, a play loosely based on Christie’s popular mystery And Then There Were None.
Although the theatre group’s script is decidedly more upbeat and musical than Christie’s original murder mystery.
“They’re not the same characters and it’s not the same set,” said director Sheila Coultish.
In Something’s Afoot, six people are invited to Lord Rancourt’s home, which also houses three servants. An unexpected student drops in to bring the total cast to 10.
Rancourt has named a young woman as his heir – someone who happens to be his illegitimate child. All the guests and servants have some knowledge of the situation.
One by one, they’re bumped off.
“But it’s very funny,” Coultish said. “It’s all done really tongue in cheek.”
Nanaimo Theatre Group, which is celebrating its 50th season this year, produced the musical murder mystery more than 30 years ago. Three of the original cast members returned, with two playing the same characters they did decades ago.
“That says something about the longevity of Nanaimo Theatre Group,” Coultish said.
Arvon Brunt took on the role of musical director for the play, having worked with Coultish on last year’s Godspell.
The 10 cast members, including two new actors never before on stage, are learning, songs, lines and choreography.
“They’re having an absolute ball and they’re doing really well,” Coultish said.
Catch the cast in Something’s Afoot at the Bailey Studio on Rosstown Road beginning Wednesday (May 18) until June 4 at 8 p.m. A matinee is scheduled for May 29 at 2 p.m.
