Madmen come to Okanagan

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra’s recent concert featured the music of Elton John as performed by Jeans ’n Classics, a rock ensemble comprised of Jean Mellieur on vocals, Paul Mutzabaugh on piano, Daryl Stacey on electric bass and JeffChristmas on drums. It was exciting to see rockers playing side by side with classically trained musicians.

While the evening was undoubtedly a success, there was a ripple of concern when Jean Mellieur confessed that he was unableto sing due to illness. Fortunately, renowned Kelowna actor Rick Worrall “happened” to be in the audience and filled inadmirably. As well, Maestra Rosemary Thomson stepped in to sing three lovely ballades, illustrating her innate understandingof all musical genres.

Of the evening’s hits, a spirited rendition of Crocodile Rock involved enthusiastic audience participation. As well, Honky Catwas a particular highlight with Mellieur capturing its quirky and fun character.

After intermission, the Kelowna Secondary School Chamber Choir provided some beautiful backup vocals, then sang BringHim Home from the musical and Danny Boy under the direction of Sheila French.

It was a testament to the high quality of professional and amateur performers in the Okanagan that this concert went on asscheduled in spite of the changes and substitutions bravo to administration and performers alike!
