Folk rock music with a country flavour will feed musical appetites at the Shady Rest Pub this Saturday, with the Big Twang Theory.
Dave Marco heads this band, a veteran to lounge and coffeehouse performing.
Marco started off performing as a folk singer at age 16 while living in Edmonton. After a few years he hit the road and travelled around Western Canada. This was in the 70s, and he garnered a good reputation as a lounge entertainer throughout that decade.
In Kamloops in 1978, Marco set a possible world record (although someone forgot to call Guinness) playing non-stop for 15 hours without any breaks and without repeating any songs. This was an event following “the big beer strike,” when lots of weak American beer was imported, he explained. So to get rid of all this weak beer, they decided to hold this event, with a CTV weatherman tending the bar.
Marco relocated to Alberta shortly after, and when Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) were introduced in that province work started drying up, he said. Marco took to working on the oil patch for a number of years. In 2008, when many of the sub contractors were let go, Marco came to Vancouver Island to resume his music career.
Today, Marco’s got more than 1,000 songs in his repertoire and many originals to boot. For the past couple years he has teamed up with a number of other local seasoned musicians, and they call themselves Big Twang Theory.
The group plays country rock and will be bringing it to the Shady Rest Pub in Qualicum Beach at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, as well as July 20.
Marco also hosts Monday night Open Mic at The Shady. For more on the Shady Rest visit www.shadyrest.ca or call 250-752-9111.
