Virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Celso Machado will be returning to the Errington Hall for a show Jan. 12 following a conversation and performance in the Musically Speaking series at the McMillan Arts Centre that day.
Machado won World Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2008 and has been nominated for four Juno awards, among many other achievements.
The Gibsons-based musician moved to Canada in 1988 and has been performing and composing music for around forty years throughout Brazil, Western Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, and the United States and the music he wrote for classical guitar is increasingly being performed around the world.
Machado said he has a busy year planned for 2013, including a number of tours in the United States, as well as Europe.
“There will be a lot of interesting things,” he said, “I’m going to places I’ve never been before.”
Machado’s music stems from Brazil and is a mixture of jazz and folk with influences like classical European, African, and Portuguese, he said.
He is a multi-instrumentalist and besides his celebrated compositions for solo guitar he writes for ensembles, including music for violin and flute. He will be bringing some stringed instruments to his performances on the 12th, including the West-African ngoni, as well as a variety of flutes and percussion instruments.
At Musically Speaking, Machado will have a conversation with host David Malek, while also performing and interacting with the audience. This event runs from 2 to 3 p.m. and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students at the door.
Machado’s last performance at the Errington Hall sold out and he said was a very rewarding experience for him.
“That was wonderful, it was a warm audience and was such a perfect place to play, I (felt) so at home.”
The show starts at 8 p.m. and $20 tickets can be purchased at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville, Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach and at the Errington Store. Children 12 and under are $5 and under 5’s are free.
