Progressive metal band Protest The Hero brings its Scurrilous tour to Abbotsford on April 4 at the Abbey Arts Centre.

The quintet from Whitby, Ont. releases its third studio album on March 22. Scurrilous is the follow-up to the band’s 2008 sophomore release Fortress, and reunites the group with producer Julius “Juice” Butty.

Originally named Happy Go Lucky, the band lineup has remained the same since their formation in 1999. The band changed its name to Protest The Hero shortly before releasing their 2002 debut EP, Search for the Truth.

Joining Protest The Hero on stage will be Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster and Tesseract.

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster is an American metal band whose name and concept are based on the legend of Ma Barker and her sons. It was the 2007 release of their second album, the critically acclaimed II, that expanded on this concept of exploring the true tales of the 1920s gangster Ma Barker and her prohibition-era crime family. Maylene’s brand of metal/hard rock is infused with southern beats.

Since the formation of Tesseract in 2007, the UK band has continued to cultivate a growing international fan base. The show begins at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available for $22.50 online at www.ticketweb.ca, or $25 at the door.
