Vancouver Island Opera will kick off its recital series March 23. Tickets are $15 at the door.

The 2014 Recital Series of concerts, organized by the Vancouver Island Opera supports the opera company and introduces young, talented musicians and opera singers to Parksville Qualicum Beach.

On March 23 the first of the Recital Series will kick off at the McMillan Arts Centre where Mexican Oboist Geronimo Mendoza will perform.

Mendoza began his musical training at the age of 11. He has collaborated with many professional orchestras in Mexico and Canada including the Calgary Philharmonic, Vancouver Opera and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras.

Additionally, Mendoza has also collaborated with the New Music Vancouver Orchestra, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the Phenix Choir as well as many other chamber ensembles.

As a former member of the Mexico City Philharmonic, he has worked with renown artists and conductors and has been on tours around Europe and Asia.

Mendoza has attended international music festivals and master classes, working with world-celebrated artist such as John Mack, Ray Still, Alex Klein, Louis Pellerin, Isaac Durate, Ingo Goritzki, Christoph Lindemann, Charles “Chip” Hamann and Emanuel Abbuhl. He is a three-time grant recipient of the Mexico Arts Council (FONCA) and also has been awarded by the BC Arts Council. He is currently a member of the Vancouver Island and Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestras.

Mendoza will be at the MAC on March. 23 at 2.30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door and refreshments are included.
