Seven Steps to Heaven is a tribute to jazz legend Miles Davis at the McMillan Arts Centre.
The Dave Stewart Septet will be presenting the tribute at the MAC (133 McMillan St., Parksville) on March 4 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $12 and are available at the MAC box office or online.
Active in his music until his death in 1991, Miles Davis had an outstanding career in jazz music that spanned more than six full decades.
Davis’s unique talent in sensing new directions in jazz made him an innovative leader throughout his career as he introduced and played new styles, greatly evolving the jazz scene. His talent attracted many musicians who performed with him, and together they recorded a significant number of albums which were produced by Davis.
Davis’s album Kind of Blue reached platinum sales in 1959 and today still remains on the the top-selling jazz albums of all time.
The Dave Stewart Septet is currently composed of in-demand local musicians from central Vancouver Island. Each musician is individually talented, but together they make up a dynamic combination.
The septet currently consists of Dave Stewart, Claudio Fantinato (alto-saxophone and clarinet), Dan Craven (tenor saxophone), Jeff Agopsowicz (trombone), Chad Geekie (piano), Wayne Finnucan (drums) and Rob Uffen (bass).
Stewart, who plays trumpet and flugelhorn, is the group leader and organizer. As a trumpet player, Stewart finds much of his inspiration in the “trumpet magnificence” of Davis.
The Dave Stewart Septet loves to share their interpretation of Davis’s work during his “cool jazz era,” a musically prolific and significant period in his life from 1955-1961.
The skills of the septet members give the flexibility to arrange and perform these musical gems from the jazz giant for today’s audience.
