Mutton Busting: Kids activities to check out at the upcoming Cloverdale Rodeo

Your kid-friendly guide to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair

With the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair just around the corner, running from May 19–22, families with children need to be prepared on how to get the best out of the experience.

Aside from the Cowboys, cattle, and chilli – the three C’s – , the fair is deeply rooted with childhood, adolescence, and growth. The Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association supports youth in agriculture, provides a scholarship program, and promotes youth volunteerism. So it only makes sense that they would have activities and features dedicated to children.

There are three zones at the country fair, Agri, Kidz, and Cone. The Agri Zone has animals and their babies, for your babies. The Kidz Zone will provide your little buckaroos with cowboy or cowgirl training. And the Cone Zone is for the fast and furious children that want to steer go-karts.

But as parents, how do we prepare ourselves for the day?  Get there early. Getting there early allows yourself to enjoy the fair without the rush of the crowds. Remember to pace yourself and know when it’s time to call it a day. Pack water bottles, emergency kits, wet wipes, rain gear, and snacks. Bring a backpack that is comfortable, weather friendly, and can pack the supplies noted above. Another trick is to sneak an empty garbage bag in with you, so that if junior wins a ridiculously big stuffed gorilla, you don’t have to carry it around like a third child. Also, remember that cash is key! Instead of spending time at the ATM to withdraw the cash for rides, drinks, or activities, have it on hand ahead of time.

If junior wants to be more involved with the rodeo, then Mutton Busting is the way to go. Sponsored by the Kesler Family, Mutton Busting is similar to bull riding, but the children ride or race sheep. For the Cloverdale Rodeo Mutton Busting, children must be three years or old, under 45 pounds, and wear a helmet. They also must have their guardians sign a release and provide a proof of personal injuries.

Deadline for the Mutton Busting entry is Friday, May 5, at 4:30 p.m.
