Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation hosts fundraiser

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation is hosting a craft market to help raise money for local school children in need.

The organization presents the Hello Spring craft market Saturday (May 6) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Nanaimo District Secondary School, located at 355 Wakesiah Ave.

“This will be our first handmade market fundraiser of the year and it has already attracted 70 vendors, many of whom took part in our December Handmade for the Holidays craft market,” said Crystal Dennison, executive director of Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation, in a press release. “There are great gift ideas for all occasions, and Mother’s Day shoppers won’t want to miss this event that will feature a wide range of items such as scarves, jewelry, candles, soaps, T-shirts, and much more. We will also have some outdoor vendors.”

Admission is by donation with a suggested contribution of $2.

“It’s shaping up to be a great market and a nice opportunity to shop local for great gifts made by local people and support local students in need,” said Dennison.

Money raised from donations, table rentals, raffles and the concession stand will benefit the foundation’s student support program to help local school children living in poverty. According to the foundation’s press release, Nanaimo school district historically “has a high child poverty rate.” The foundation raises money for scholarships and bursaries and helps provide meals, school supplies, clothing, gym shoes, school fees and other items for students living in poverty.
