Nanaimo Oktoberfest celebration back for fifth year

Event is a fundraiser for the Daybreak Rotary Club

Nanaimo Oktoberfest is back for its fifth year and chairperson Sheila Forrest is hoping to bring in $7,000 for the Daybreak Rotary Club.

“Our main goal is just to have the community come out and have a great time,” she said. “But ultimately it is a fundraiser and our hope is that we come out in the black and have some money that we can put back into the community.”

The event will feature beers from from Longwood, Wolf and White Sails breweries and for the fourth year the Doctors of Rock ‘n’ Roll will provide the musical entertainment.

Singer and saxophonist Russ Der said it’s a good cause and a good opportunity to break out the lederhosen.

“We’ll be doing a lot of the traditional German music from Oktoberfest: polkas and dances,” Der said. “Plus we’ll throw in lots of party tunes, too, because that’s the whole idea of Oktoberfest.”

WHAT’S ON … Nanaimo Oktoberfest comes to Beban Park social centre, 2300 Bowen Rd. on Saturday, Oct. 19. Doors at 7 p.m, tickets cost $30 and are available online.
