The Abbotsford Arts Council presents its next exhibit, Imagination in Reality, starting this Saturday, March 19 at Kariton Art Gallery.

The exhibit features works by local artists and teachers Shannon Thiesen and Chelaine Neufeldt in collaboration with their students at ASIA North Poplar elementary.

The opening reception is this Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring a live pianist and singer, and wine from the Mt. Lehman Winery.

Imagination in Reality draws on the inherent tension between the developmental stages of child and adult.

As educators in the visual arts, Thiesen and Neufeldt have been inspired by their students’ wonder when approaching the creative process, and have developed a “living mixed-media” process by elaborating on drawings done by the youngsters, immersing them in the structural landscapes of the adult world.

Sing for Hope is a non-profit organization in New York City that seeks to makes art accessible to the public through community arts projects such as The Piano Project.

This year, Thiesen and Neufeldt have been selected to paint one of the pianos and will travel to New York in March. Proceeds from the sale of works showcased at the Kariton will go towards funding their trip.

The exhibition runs until April 5. Kariton Art Gallery is located at 2387 Ware St.
