A powerful new film by the Valley’s Nick Versteeg, which opens a window onto a world of drugs, gangs, and crime, gets its first showing Thursday, Oct. 27.

My Story: by Jonas Archer, is both riveting and educational.

Watching it, you can experience a typical, frenetic night at Cowichan District Hospital’s Emergency department.

On top of that, you can learn the shocking statistics as what Versteeg calls “a wave of death” from drug use travels through our communities.

The disturbing facts about the killer-drugs fentanyl and W-18, and the so-called wonder-drug Narcan, as well as marijuana, cocaine, heroin and crystal meth are also presented as part of the event.

Parents and friends can hear about the symptoms to look for to discover if someone is experimenting with drugs.

In addition, there is a chance to find out about Island Health’s plans for supervised consumption sites.

Versteeg will preview the documentary, and offer the chance for the audience to talk with Jonas himself, plus an RCMP officer, a medical doctor from Cowichan District Hospital, an Island Health spokesperson and a recovering addict.

It’s all happening at the Christian Reformed Church at 930 Trunk Rd. in Duncan on Wednesday, Oct. 27 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free but seating is limited so it’s best to arrive early.

There will be a second showing of the video, with a limited panel, at the Christian Reformed Church on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m., specifically for Cowichan teens.
