New mural for artist’s studio

Artist Brian Scott is painting a new mural for the front of his Black Creek Studio.

The subject is his brother Grant Scott’s fishboat, Wandelaine.

The artist wanted a strong image to stand out on the front of his galleries/studio complex to attract visitors on the Old Island Highway.

His sculpture garden also includes many local artists such as Tim Halley.

‘Wanda’ is a passion of Scott’s brother, Grant, who lives not only to fish but also hang out with other fishermen up and down the coast.

This is the source of many of the stories the artist has used in his books. Wandelaine is more than 50 years old and has been through many refits over the years. She was not happy when brother Grant purchased Sun Corona, a larger fishboat so he could live his dream to fish in Haida Gwaii.  The artist’s studio is open for visitors everyday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Scott features two studios, one for oils and one for acrylic painting.

He has two out buildings as well as the main house. Each of the three art galleries features a different aspect of his work. Scott has global outreach with paintings done while travelling on cruise ships as well as his Arizona studio which he has since sold. His passion, however, is still Vancouver Island, fishboats, old salmon canneries, Pier Street and Haig Brown House.

He has contributed more than $20,000 to the North Island College Foundation and Scott says he believes that if you give a student an A plus with a check for $1,000 it carries great weight. The artist received a similar scholarship when he was a student at Emily Carr in the 1970s.
