Vancouver Island MusicFest has revealed the new 2012 poster image.
A long-standing tradition for the Vancouver Island MusicFest has been to create a new poster each year. For 2012 the VI MusicFest turned to celebrated Union Bay fine artist Joe Smith.
“The thought of doing a piece for the Vancouver Island MusicFest was intriguing,” said Smith. “The image had to convey the feel of the festival — the Valley and most importantly, the music.”
Driving the creative process for Smith was the idea of “music as colour.”
Staying true to his passion for watercolors, one of the mediums he uses, Smith created a distinctive image depicting the Island, the glacial mountains, the sea and the musical roots of the festival. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the design is the subtle suggestion of forest that transitions into reaching bands of colour depicting the tones of the diatonic scale — Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti.
“We love this image,” says artistic director Doug Cox. “It’s unlike anything we’ve ever done before. It has a great feel and Joe has given us a wonderful gift with this original work.”
Smith has also donated the original artwork to MusicFest, which plans to feature the piece as part of the fundraising initiatives during the festival.
Versions of the original Joe Smith creation will be used on all marketing and promotional materials for the 2012 Vancouver Island Music Festival as well as a variety of merchandise to be sold leading up to and during the festival July 6 to 8.
