New projects, fundraising kick 2016 into high gear

A new exhibit, a book sale and pool mural application deadlines on the Alberni arts scene this week.

The next art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre will be something special from local Tseshaht First Nations Chief Hugh Braker.

This exciting exhibit showcases a chosen part of Braker’s personal collection of items from his world travels to Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Brazil and elsewhere.

The exhibit opens to the public Jan. 20 and will run until Feb. 5. Stop by the gallery Saturday, Jan. 23 from 1–3 p.m. to meet Braker and talk about his adventures.

Bring in books

The Rollin Art Centre is now accepting gently used books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles for their annual book sale, which will take place May 6–7.  We cannot accept any National Geographic, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digests or textbooks.

Please drop off donations at the Rollin Art Centre, inside, under the staircase in the wooden box.

This is one of the Community Arts Council’s biggest fundraisers. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located at 3061 Eighth Ave. or call 250-724-3412 for more info.

Pool murals deadline

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley, in collaboration with the City of Port Alberni is looking for artists to design original permanent murals to be installed at Echo Centre Pool for our Phase II project.

Different sized murals will once again cover the walls in the pool area at Echo Aquatic Centre. If you are interested, please drop by the Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre or call for more details at 250-724-3412. Complete application packages and guidelines are available for pick up at the Rollin Art Centre and Echo Centre.

Deadline for all applications is Jan. 15.

CAC renewals due

This is a reminder to all current Community Arts Council members, and everyone else who would like to help support the council, that all memberships will now be renewed in January. This annual membership date will be for everyone.

If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2016, pop by the Rollin Art Centre today. The cost is only $17 for adults, $12 for seniors and $22 for a family. As we are a non-profit organization we rely on the generous support of art patrons like you. So please, help support the Community Arts Council today so we can help support local artists tomorrow.

It’s a special O party

Alberni Valley Citizen of the Year Nancy Wilmot is holding a birthday party and Special Olympics’ fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 6–9 p.m. at Char’s Landing. Local musicians will be performing, tapas will be served throughout the evening and there will be a silent auction and Loonie-Toonie items. Admission by donation.

All proceeds to go to Special Olympics programming, because sometimes smiles do have a price tag.

Call to artists

Art Rave will be sponsoring an art show at The Rollin Art Centre for the new Solstice Festival taking place in June.

This will comprise original art that is for sale, and will run from June 17–30 as part of the Solstice Arts Festival. Artists from all media are invited to submit work to the curators in a digital format, on or before March 18, to albernisolstice@gmail.com.

Preference will be given to pieces 24×24” and smaller if the work requires inside display. Sculptures or other works that can be displayed outside are encouraged and no size requirements apply.

Video artworks will also be welcomed. Additional details on the show, the terms of sale and the festival can be obtained from the email address above.
