There are plenty of ways to say a fond farewell to 2016 and ring in 2017 in Penticton.
The Penticton Art Gallery and Penticton Arts Council are bringing back the swingin’ 1960s with A New StART at the Art Gallery.
“We thought it would fit really well with the show that’s on right now (Toni Onley). Part of that show will still be hanging for the party so it fits in really well with the theme,” said Tim Tweed, president of the Penticton and District Community Arts Council. “Also, it’s about 50 years ago, it’s a couple of generations ago. It’s a theme that’s a bit underused. People do disco themes and ‘80s parties, but we thought we wanted something where we could really tap into the great music of that period.”
Local five-piece band Yanti and Company are providing the ‘60s-flavoured music, and Tweed is spinning tunes as well as DJ Tenacious T.
Price of admission is $35 for the general public and $30 for arts council and art gallery members. Also drawing from the ‘60s influence are the food and appetizers being served up to patrons.
“You might see some moulded Jell-O on the table and some things that were very popular in the ‘60s. Probably no Spam, but you never know,” Tweed said.
Local winery Bench 1775 has provided some of their Sparkling Rosé for the midnight toast alongside spirits provided by Legend Distilling and beer from Tin Whistle Brewing.
The proceeds from the fundraising event go towards the Penticton Art Gallery with a smaller portion going to the Penticton Arts Council.
“The art gallery is in a little bit of a financial pinch right now. The arts council wanted to do a fun fundraiser to help out our brothers at the art gallery and bring the arts community together to celebrate what is hopefully going to be an awesome year,” Tweed said.
