The North Island Choral Society is preparing for its spring 2017 rehearsals.
Two works are to be performed on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8. These are: Joseph Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis, known as Lord Nelson Mass, Hob. XXII:11, premiered in September 1798, and Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, first performed in May 1874.
The NICS repertoire covers a broad range of classical choral music. Concerts involve about 100 singers and musicians. The sound produced and the choice of music is unique to this choir in the Comox Valley. Paul Colthorpe, together with accompanist Elvera Penner, makes rehearsals a pleasant two hours, while gently challenging all the singers.
NICS welcomes those of all ages who want to sing classical music — and there are no auditions to scare you off! It is clearly a good community choir.
Rehearsals are at Mark Isfeld Secondary at 1551 Lerwick Rd. in Courtenay on Tuesdays starting at 7 p.m. Membership is $50 (students are $30) for the spring session. The first rehearsal is free.
