It’s time to get cultured.
A number of fun events are taking place over Culture Days, and the North Okanagan is no exception.
Besides the Stories of the Past exhibition, the Vernon Community Arts Centre is hosting a number of free workshops for all ages in painting, drawing, fused glass, writing, keyboards and more.
The workshops take place Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the day culminates with a coffee house at 4 p.m., with entertainment by local musicians.
Those stopping by the VCAC Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. can also participate in a collaborative art sculpture scavenger hunt, involving three other Vernon cultural organizations.
“Participants can visit the VCAC, Vernon Public Art Gallery and Caetani Cultural Centre to create and decorate a four-by-four-inch cardboard square, and then finish the scavenger hunt at Gallery Vertigo, where the squares will be put together to create a collaborative art sculpture,” said local Culture Days ambassador Keyanna Burgher. “When you go to all the locations, you will be entered to win a gift put together by Leap art supplies.”
In Enderby, the public is invited to visit the building adjacent to the Courtyard Gallery on Belvedere Street, Saturday from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m., to meet with artists and learn about their process of creation.
“In celebration of Culture Days, a number of the artists from Courtyard Gallery will be there to answer your questions and talk about their process, from inspiration to final product,” said participating artist Tatianna O’Donnell.
The Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library and Vernon Performing Arts Centre are also getting in on the action with the return of Booksmack!
The Sunday, Oct. 2 event starts at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre and includes a panel of writers and readers who will speed review as many books and films as they can in an hour.
“Booklists are promised and hilarity is guaranteed,” said Vernon librarian Kristi Hennings. “It is a festival of nerdiness that celebrates books and book lovers while also celebrating Culture Days.”
Refreshments will be served and like all Culture Days events, admission and participation is free.
