Jennifer Scott

Noted jazz vocalist hosts workshop

Singing workshops at the Lower Native Sons’ Hall on May 28

Do you want to sing more confidently, develop your skill and comfort with improvisation? There’s a vocal teacher you need to meet. Jennifer Scott is considered by her peers and fans to be the finest jazz vocal improviser in Canada. She is also a skilled and intuitive teacher.  Scott will be offering two vocal workshops in Courtenay on Saturday, May 28, sponsored by the Georgia Straight Jazz Society.

You may have heard Scott sing at Vancouver Island MusicFest in 2009, or at any one of her beautifully crafted performances with bassist Rene Worst. She has toured across North America and Europe, including appearances with Clark Terry, Paul Horn, Jane Bunnett and Kenny Wheeler.  Listen to samples of her music at www.jenniferscott.ca

The singing workshops will take place at the Lower Native Sons’ Hall at 360 Cliffe Ave. on May 28.   The morning session on vocal technique and improvisation will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Singers work with Scott to improve breath control, vocal technique and improvisational skills.  Stronger focus will be on improvisation and how to maximize your voice. The afternoon session, ‘Getting the Most From A Song,’ will run from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will perform a solo number (accompanied by piano and bass) and receive tips on performance, playing with a duo, personal expression and more.

Singers may take one or both workshops. The morning session is $20, the afternoon session is $40, and there is a discounted price of $50 for those who take both. The afternoon session is strictly limited to 10 registrants. Advance registration is required for both sessions. To register, or for more information, phone Dale at 250-339-6989.

Scott will also be performing with Worst in Courtenay on May 26. The Georgia Straight Jazz Society is pleased to present these leading lights of the Canadian jazz scene at the Avalanche Bar and Grill.
