Oak Bay News hosts artist opening

Oak Bay Community Artists Society will be on hand April 27 to launch the latest newsroom showcase

After more than a year showcasing local artists, the gallery at Oak Bay News hosts its inaugural artist reception this month.

“It’s really important for just to support the community and it’s a great way we can showcase local talent. We can expose them to a new audience,” said publisher Janet Gairdner. “They lend us this art to beautify our office and this is a way to give back and promote them. It’s an opportunity to give residents a chance to meet the artists as well.”

The current showcase features a dozen members of the Oak Bay Community Artists Society.

“It’s always nice to be ably to show work,” said artist Ilka Bauer as she hung the newest show at the Oak Bay News office in Athlone Court.

It’s the third showcase in the newspaper office for OBCAS which has 36 members and also organizes the original Bowker Creek Brush Up slated for Aug. 14 this year.

“A lot of the artist will be in the spring studio tour as well. We are also always at municipal hall,” Bauer said.

An artists reception is Thursday, April 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Oak Bay News.

“It’s always interesting to get feedback. Personally I find everybody reacts differently to a piece,” Bauer said. “It’s nice to have an opening and have the artist meet different people. It also a traditional thing.”

OBCAS work is on display at the Oak Bay News, 207A-2187 Oak Bay Ave. (Athlone Court). Visit weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
