Oka set to play the last Summer Kicks show of the year.

Summer Kicks is closing with a bang on Thursday, August 18. The last band of the summer will be Oka, and Australian band with a lot of heart.

“[To describe our music], it would probably be easier to use someone else’s description. ‘Try to imagine Bob Marley meets Stevie Wonder via the Chemical Brothers, playing in a steaming rainforest with a didgeridoo and you are getting close.”

Oka, a phonetic spelling for the word ‘ochre’, is the traditional Australian Aboriginal people’s body paint.

“In this case, the word stands for the musical colours of the earth.”

Their music reflects this name with songs about being positive and Australian experiences.

“And about the different elements that inspire us as musicians and people. “

Oka is no stranger to touring the world. The nine year old band has toured Canada, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore.

The band has even played in Golden before.

“We were there in February for our first Canadian winter tour and played at the pub. We were lucky enough to get a snowboard session in at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort the following day.”

Playing great music has kept the band a close-knit group, something they do not take for granted. “Our biggest accomplishment is keeping it together and growing after nine years. Our best compliments are whenever someone gets a positive lift from our music.”

For this Golden show, Oka said those who are attending should not try to predict what to expect.

“It’s probably best to come to our show with no expectations but with an open mind and heart. The urge to dance is extremely likely.”

If you would like to listen to Oka, come out to the last Summer Kicks Concert of the summer on August 18.
