Out and about in Sorrento

Planning is now underway for Sorrento’s widely anticipated centennial celebrations.

Planning is now underway for Sorrento’s widely anticipated centennial celebrations and the crew has put together a fabulous list of events suitable for all ages.

Sorrento is inviting everyone from around the globe to take part in the events, including a homecoming invitation to all former residents and for all who have enjoyed a Shuswap-Sorrento rendezvous.

Some of the events planned to date include a picnic and regatta in June, a self-guided tour of historical houses in July and an official opening ceremony and street party on July 21.

In September, a family festival will include a show and shine and a concert featuring Cranbrook group Lillix.

The festivities will wrap up with a Boxing Day dance at Memorial Hall. A full day of entertainment is planned including food, vendors and dignitaries on site.

The Sorrento 100th Anniversary crew is looking for volunteers and potential sponsors.

If you would like to be a part of this celebration, contact Erika Zazzi (Conkers, Fine British Imports), volunteer co-ordinator at 250-675-3786.

Pancakes

Pancake Day is Tuesday, Feb. 21, the options for this ancient form of bread are vast across cultures. There are the crepes, tortillas, naan, to name a few.

The breakfast variety of pancakes we see at community breakfasts can be served up with whipped cream and fruit, with some real maple syrup – yummy. These days I get excited when I find a new gluten-free pancake mix for home use.

Bannock is another pan bread, which by Scottish tradition is made out of oatmeal. First Nations bannock is made mostly of flour and water, cooked over a fire, or deep fried to a delicious golden bun shape.

Added ingredients again are up to the imagination of the cook, an adventure for the taste buds, true comfort food.

Celebrating with Mardi Gras or pancakes, Feb. 21 is the last day before Lent, when the fasting begins.

Shrove Tuesday, another name for Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday in Christian cultures. Ash Wednesday starts the season of Lent, 40 days before Easter.

Ash Wednesday on Feb. 22 marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.

It is a season of penance, reflection and fasting in preparation for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday

Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice, a reminder that man is dust and to dust we will return.

The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance.

On Ash Wednesday, the bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the 40 days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes rendered from the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday.

Then, while the faithful recited the seven penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins, just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of paradise because of his disobedience.

The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday, after having won reconciliation by the toil of 40 days’ penance and sacramental absolution.

Community forum

Carlin and Sorrento Schools are holding a community forum at Carlin Elementary Middle School Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The School District #83 community forum is for parents and other interested community members with discussion aimed at how schools might better engage learners in this millennium.

Day of Prayer

As part of the Lenten season, The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the U.S. in 1920.

This event became the International World Day of Prayer in 1922 and, since then, Christians around the world celebrate the event annually on the first Friday of March.

Everyone in the Sorrento/Blind Bay area is invited to join in this year’s World Day of Prayer service on Friday, March 2 at 2 p.m., hosted by Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church at 2740 Fairway Hills Rd., Blind Bay.

This year’s event has been prepared by the women of Malaysia and focuses on the subject, “Let Justice Prevail.”

Services will feature the unique culture and heritage of Malaysia, with prayers for the whole planet. Several area churches are taking part in the service, and everyone is welcome. For further information, contact Dawn Fitzmaurice at 250- 675-5081.

New look

Munro’s Sorrento Prescriptions at 1250 Trans-Canada Hwy. (on the south side of the highway) is more like a department store than a pharmacy.

With 2,000 additional square feet, a flower shop has been added, along with a new section for pet supplies. The prescription area has been expanded as has the giftware selection.

“There has been more room added throughout the store, improving product selection, enhancing the busy prescription counter, continuing the best service possible for customers in the future,” said store manager Diane Peterson.

No need to travel to that big-box store miles away, when the local merchants like Munro’s have everything you need, and everything you didn’t know you needed.
