Out Innerspace is back in Vernon to stage Major Motion Picture

Major Motion Picture is the first show of the Vernon Performing Arts Centre’s 2016/2017 dance series.

Out Innerspace Dance Theatre is known for exploring movement within different spaces, but there is one space that is becoming a familiar home to the Vancouver contemporary dance company.

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre is once again opening its doors to Out Innerspace, which stages its latest work, Major Motion Picture, Friday.

In January, the company arrived in Vernon for a technical residency at the Performing Arts Centre to incorporate lights and projection into Major Motion Picture.

This is not the first time the company has held a residency at the PAC. They were at the centre in 2013 to work on their dance performance, Vessel, along with other works.

While here in January, Out Innerspace artistic directors David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen facilitated workshops for dance and drama students and gave a private show for its workshop attendees and the centre’s dance subscription ticket holders.

“The company is back to engage all levels of dance experience with a deep interest in discovery and play,” said the Performing Art Centre’s artistic director Erin Kennedy. “They incorporate their own dance making methods and repertoire with an aim to translate them into universal and personal approaches for the participants to experiment with their own dance impulses.”

Major Motion Picture is the first show of the Performing Arts Centre’s 2016/2017 dance series and Vernon is the first stop on Out Innerspace’s current fall tour.

Choreographed by Raymond and Tregarthen, Major Motion Picture explores timely cultural themes of surveillance, territory, propaganda and belief through eccentric and lawless characters.

Seven dancers fight for the theatre, losing and gaining the grounds for their power, identity and desire. Two populations emerge, The Insiders and The Others, while one character, The Representative, manufactures conflict and information.

“Out Innerspace recognizes the importance of challenging our preconceptions of what can be expected, experienced and expounded in contemporary dance,” said Kennedy. “The performance includes infrared technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside Out Innerspace’s trailblazing movement invention.”

The innovative choreography is set to the music of Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Pulse Percussion Ensemble, Vanalles, Young Gutted and an original composition by Belgian producer Tristan Vloeberghs.
