The Rotary Club of Parksville has kicked up its Canada Day events this year and it’s going to be a fantastic day, according to Kim Burden with the Rotary Club of Parksville.

“Everything’s sort of bigger, better…” he said. “More food, more parade entries, (and) more vendors.”

Burden said the big change this year is the closing off the the Community Park to vehicles. Besides that there are new children activities like a miniature train and there will be more games in general for young people, he said. A new stage will allow better use of the area and Dana Hutchings from Chek 6 News will be the full-time emcee this year.

“She loves Parksville so she’ll be great,” Burden said.

Canadian tribute artists The TimeBenders will be the headlining act, and Burden said they’re sure to be a hit with the crowd.

“They’re fantastic; they’re actually a performance rather than just music,” he said, adding, “they put on a real show.”

Other music artists performing are El Gemo, The Midnights, The McShane Family, For the Birds, The Racket Club and Mark Anthony and his Tribute to Elvis.

The Canada Day parade begins at 10 a.m. on July 1, official ceremonies kick off at noon in the Community Park and entertainment starts at 12:30.

The Timbenders will be the last act, beginning around 8:30 and the Thrifty Foods Fireworks Spectacular commences at 10 p.m.

The Rotary Club of Parksville and its sponsors make all the free events of the day possible and donations are appreciated in their donation buckets. Fifty-Fifty tickets or the purchase of bottled water also benefits the club.
