Seattle’s Pearl Django plays gypsy jazz and they do it with such verve, skill and pleasure that they’re pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike.

The group started as a trio in Tacoma, Wash. in 1994, incorporating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with American swing. They quickly expanded to a quintet, adding a violinist and a third guitarist. Considered the Pacific Northwest’s most acclaimed gypsy jazz quintet, they have a dozen CDs and have performed throughout the U.S. and abroad.

They play in Oak Bay Friday night.

The band’s extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Their signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities. Having cultivated a devoted and enthusiastic following, Pearl Django continues to play to packed houses wherever they perform.

Hear them Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Upstairs Lounge at Oak Bay Recreation Centre, 1975 Bee St. Tickets are $20 in advance at Ivy’s Books and Oak Bay Recreation Centre reception or online at www.beaconridgeproductions.com.
