Penticton’s Dream Café is re-opening, bringing back unique live music experiences at their venue and also online starting in October.
The full schedule of hybrid shows was released on Sept. 27, and the tickets for the first show with JW Jones on Oct. 12 are already on sale.
Due to the current situation, the shows will have limited in-person seating, but will also be available for live streaming.
The 20 concerts that make up the performance schedule feature acts as varied as the JUNO award-nominated folk legend Harry Manx, the world-renowned jazz pianist and JUNO winner Laila Biali, and critically acclaimed blues guitarist David Gogo.
For the last 19 months, the music cafe has been closed, with the 20 shows originally planned to start in September, until they were delayed a month.
Although the 20 shows are more than what the cafe was able to run in 2020, it is still a far cry from the 225 shows the cafe hosted in 2019.
“Reopening The Dream Café wasn’t an option, it was a requirement,” says Lori Keith, Dream Café’s coop chair. “The music industry relies on this venue as an anchor of Western Canadian artist routing and is widely seen as a safe place to launch a concert tour or profile an emerging artist.”
Since their closure, the cafe has secured a grant from the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings, which is what has allowed them to re-open with limited capacity as well as to partner with Misty Mountain Sound to video and stream the live performances.
“Our new hybrid show model features a limited seating live performance and a week of streaming access,” said Hazel Bennett, the cafe’s artistic director.
