Presented by the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society with the support of the Cariboo Regional District and the City of Williams Lake, opening night of the Performances in the Park series starts this Thursday, July 7.
Opening night features Nathan Lamb-Yorski, Red Monkey Black King and the Williams Lake Fiddlers.
Lamb-Yorski is a young local singer and songwriter who has been writing songs for the past three years. The band Red Monkey Black King is inspired by artists like The Black Keys – Red Monkey Black King combines intoxicating alternative rock with electrifying blues.
The Williams Lake Fiddlers are a group of musicians who play fiddles, keyboard, guitar, bass and accordion, with vocals, to produce rollicking, foot-stomping music that will make you want to get up and dance.
Fiddle music in Canada had its origins in “home parties, or “kitchen parties” and most music played on the fiddle is played for dancing as much as for recreational listening. Fiddle music has remained popular across the country with artists like Kelli Trottier, Natalie McMaster, the Scott Woods Band, Celtic Thunder and River Dance performing music and dance and some great Canadian composers adding to the repertoire of older tunes. The music selections that will be played at Performances in the Park are a mix of the old toe-tapping jigs and reels, many of which were written by Canadian artists.
Cody‘s Bannock and Taylor Made Cakes will be on hand with bannock, sandwiches, pizza, cupcakes and sweets available for everyone during the performances. The Rotary Club of Williams Lake will also serve up burgers and hot dogs on this day.
There will be an Art in the Park kid’s corner, hosted by the Community Arts Council of Williams Lake as in previous seasons providing art projects for the little ones.
New this year is ‘Downtown Discount Daze’ offered by select businesses in the downtown core from 3 p.m. until closing prior to each Performances in the Park concert.
