If you want to see some amazing art and grab a beer at the same time this long weekend, head to the Cannery Brewing.
Cannery Brewing partnered with Penticton Art Gallery to create the Square Mural Project where local selected artists would be given a 4×4 foot piece of wood to create a mural depicting something that reflects Okanagan life.
“We really wanted to find a way to support artists who have been hit so hard by this pandemic,” said Cannery Brewing owner Patt Dyck. “Artists haven’t been able to have exhibition in over a year.”
When the gallery approached Dyck about the Square mural project she was on board right away.
They didn’t know how many artists would submit their portfolio for the project.
“Around 200 artists wanted to be part of the project,” Dyck said.
A jury panel narrowed it down to just eight. The artists chosen are: Zac Abney, Benjo Andringa, Dianne Bennett-Way, Liz Demer, Jolenne Mackie, Diana Palmer, Stephanie Perry and Gabrielle Strong.
Now seeing the murals hanging in the taproom, everyone couldn’t be more impressed with what they are seeing, she said.
“I love each one and they fit so perfectly in the taproom. I’m really going to miss them when they are auctioned off,” she said.
While the taproom is closed for indoor seating right now, you can look at the art when you grab your beer and food to go. The mini murals will be on display at the brewery until the fall when hopefully they can host an in-person auction.
Funds from the auction will see half of the money raised going back to the artists and half to Penticton Art Gallery.
The project was inspired by a similar mural project in the small B.C. town of Wells that started in 2009 as part of their annual ArtsWells Festival.
