The Music on Sunday series resumes its 2015-16 season focus on piano this weekend when renowned U.S. pianist Mark Anderson plays Sunday at The Old School House Arts Centre.
Anderson began piano studies at the age of 5 and went on to win major prizes at the 1992 IMCJ (Japan), the 1992 Busoni Competition (Italy), the 1993 Leeds (U.K.) and 1994 William Kapell (U.S.) International Piano Competitions.
He has toured much of the world as recitalist and soloist and is invited regularly to perform as soloist with orchestras throughout the U.S. and abroad. Closer to home, Mr. Anderson performs with a variety of Bay Area ensembles such as San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and The San Jose Chamber Players. As a duo partner, he has performed with flutist Robert Stallman, the Vertavo Quartet of Norway and the Ives Quartet in residence at Stanford University.
His most recent recording, solo piano music of Julius Röntgen – vol. 1, contains works never before recorded and was released in February 2015. A second disc of Röntgen’s piano works will be released in early 2016. Anderson records exclusively with Nimbus Records and has released seven commercial CDs to date, all of which have met with considerable critical acclaim.
He was appointed assistant professor in Piano, Piano Pedagogy and Chamber Music at University of British Columbia in September 2012. In addition, he continues to be executive director of New World Music Academy in Pleasanton, California.
Sunday’s program will feature works by Debussy (4 Preludes), Beethoven (Sonata Op.109), Schumann (Toccata) and Julius Röntgen (Sonata Op.10).
The performance is scheduled from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at TOSH, 122 Fern Road West in Qualicum Beach. Tickets are $16 and are available in advance at TOSH.
