It’s a story about tolerance and acceptance — even if the main character is just a little different.
Charlotte’s Web will be on the stage at Winchelsea Elementary School today (Fri., June 1) and the school is inviting everyone to drop in and see it, free of charge.
Starting at 1:30 p.m. and running until 2:30 p.m., the play features students in Grades 3 through 5. It also features a student reporter (with a local reference to the PQ News, we’re told).
Olivia Demedeiros plays Wilbur the pig, who is facing the end. Only through the help of her barnyard friends — including Charlotte the Spider (played by Sarah Watson) — will she have any chance at survival. Teacher Robyn Burn says students in the chorus will be wearing pink T-shirts, celebrating people’s right to be different.
Burn added they are performing the 1973 version of the play, and adding the song, Stain’ Alive from the Disco era as a special treat.
Demedeiros said she’s enjoying the role of Wilbur and said she loves theatre.
“We’re having a lot of fun,” she said.
Winchelsea Elementary School is in Parksville, at 140 Renz Road. The play is being held in the gym.
