Play flush with bathroom humour

NANAIMO - Schmooze Productions presents Urinetown: The Musical Thursday (April 21) to May 14.

In a future where big business is king the right to pee comes under fire.

After a drought, called the Stink Years, depletes the town’s water supply the Urine Good Company takes control of the supply and outlaws the use of private bathrooms. It then takes control of all public amenities and begins charging exorbitant fees for the ‘privilege to pee.’ People who break the law are exiled to Urinetown.

The character Bobby Strong must fight for the right to consume the town’s water supply.

It’s the premise of Urine-town: The Musical, written by playwright Greg Kotis with music and lyrics by Mark Hollman. Schmooze Productions presents the play from Thursday (April 21) to May 14.

“It’s all humour. It’s probably one of the funniest shows we’ve done,” said Dean Chadwick, artistic producer of Schmooze Productions. “It’s that kind of broad laugh out load kind of humour. Really what it comes down to is don’t let the title fool you.”

Chadwick said the musical’s underlying message revolves around the limited and precious nature of water resources. He said it’s a relevant topic to talk about in Nanaimo because of the droughts the community has experienced in the past and tighter water restrictions.

“It’s really a hilarious play suitable for all ages,” said Chadwick.

The play is rated PG.

Urinetown: The Musical premiers Thursday (April 21) at 8 p.m. The play runs at Harbour City Theatre, located at 25 Victoria Rd., April 21-23, 28-30 and May 5-7 and 12-14. The matinees are May 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $29 and are available at Catwalk Fashions, by calling 250-739-0721 or www.schmoozeproductions.com.
