Prairie Oyster founding member Russell deCarle comes to Cumberland on May 23 with his trio.

Were you at the historic MusicFest when Prairie Oyster joined the dearly departed Doug Sahm along with Amos Garrett for a night never to be forgotten?

Russell deCarle is a founding member, lead vocalist, bassist, and contributing songwriter to multi-platinum, Juno Award-winning, country-roots group Prairie Oyster.

Russell’s solo project, Under The Big Big Sky, is a distinct departure from the sound of the band, and features jazz and torch-blues influenced vocals on nine of 11 self-penned originals.

The deep groove of the unique live trio instrumentation (rhythm acoustic guitar, lead acoustic guitar, and accordion) brings to life material from the record, timeless classics of the ’50s and ’60s, and selected covers of musical friends and influences.

Russell’s connection to Canadian Country Music is firmly implanted on the DNA of Canadian music history from that magical night and thousands of others.

Many performers with Russell’s resume as a writer and performer would simply rest on previous accomplishments, but he continues to grow as an artist and with his trio you will be taken back to the days of the true honky tonk bar.

It’s real country with a touch of rockabilly, country swing and rock and roll.

The trio will perform Thursday, May 23 at the Cumberland Hotel.
