A preschool music program is starting up at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville where young children can learn melody, beat and rhythm by an accomplished multi-instrumentalist.
Kerri Brown is the MAC’s first resident musician, she plays in a few local bands and has taken her fair share of lessons over the years in a number of instruments. She has been teaching music lessons to children in the area for years and has discovered a real demand for preschool music.
“Parents really want their kids to start playing music early and it’s good for them to do that,” she said. “This program will focus on things that kids of that age are particularly good at. They don’t have a lot of dexterity but they can keep a rhythm, follow a melody and they might like to dance.”
She said beyond playing a number of different instruments like tambourines, drums and triangles there will also be singing.
Although the class is aimed at three to five year olds, Brown said she’d leave that up to parent’s discretion.
“Each kid develops differently so if they’re singing songs by the time they’re two or if they’re interested in music and can keep a beat, they’re a good candidate,” she said.
The program runs for eight weeks on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting September 20.
The cost is $75 per student and all children must be accompanied by a parent. All instruments are provided.
