The Kelowna Art Gallery is accepting registrations for a weekend art workshop that will focus on printmaking, with instruction by popular and award-winning local artist Briar Craig.
The workshop Pressing Material will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday, April 29, from 1 to 4 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery, and will be facilitated by University of British Columbia Okanagan printmaking professor Briar Craig.
Pressing Material will challenge traditional and contemporary ideas about what constitutes the printmaker’s plate by returning to the most direct and intuitive means of making and printing images. Participants will print from easily constructed plates and the textured surfaces of found objects.
The workshop will offer some historical references to the evolution of the printmaking matrix but will focus largely on experimental and hands-on printing processes.
Briar Craig has been a practicing print artist for more than twenty-five years and is an ardent advocate for the various media of printmaking. He believes that printmaking, in all of its forms, is perfectly suited to a post-modern approach to appropriating and constructing images.
Print media can combine and fuse disparate kinds of imagery, techniques and materials. According to Craig, “The very nature of the repeatable image mirrors many aspects of modern mass-media communication, while simultaneously allowing for the creation of a more tactile and personal image quality.”
The cost of registration for Pressing Material is $110 plus tax for gallery members, and $140 plus tax for non-members; supplies are included. Those who wish to register should call the Gallery at 250-762-2226.
