In The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness, author Carl Calleman describes the Mayan calendar as a spiritual device that enables a greater understanding of the nature of conscious evolution throughout human history and how it provides the concrete steps we can take to align ourselves with this growth toward enlightenment. Banighen has an MA in whole systems design. He founded Turtle Island Earth Stewards with a focus on land stewardship and land trusts. He is vice president of The Canadian Society of Questers and is currently a student of Mayan Shamanism.
