An art show that combines artistic talent with compassion is sure to touch visitors to the McMillan Arts Centre June 25 through 29.
It’s called Celebrating African Grandmothers, Heroes of the Continent, and it’s a travelling art show initiated by the Gogo Grannies of New Westminster. The show is touring across Western Canada and will end next year in February.
Artists from across Canada have submitted paintings, fabric art and three dimensional pieces to the show.
One of the pieces in the show was submitted by local Grandmother to Grandmother member Ann Tardiff.
“My piece is from a photo of an African mother and child which I took when I was in Kenya last year,” she said. “I was thrilled to have my art piece juried into the show and I know that everyone who visits the show will be moved by the wonderful artwork.”
Tardiff used a technique called photo transfer where she she printed the photo onto the canvas and then painted it.
Tardiff recalled hosting the Merville Grandmother’s fabric art show a few years ago where she saw many people moved to tears by the artwork.
Proceeds raised from the show will benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation, supporting African grandmothers caring for children who have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.
Peruse the artwork from 11 a.m. — 3 p.m. June 25-29 at the McMillan Arts Centre at 133 McMillan St. in Parksville.
