Pyper in 1st Tuesday concert for hospice

Sue Pyper performs Aug. 2 at the next 1st Tuesday Fundraiser event, a concert series held monthly at the Mex Pub.

Aug. 2 is the date for the next 1st Tuesday Fundraiser event, a concert series held monthly at the Mex Pub.

This month’s feature performer is Sue Pyper, a singer, songwriter and artist celebrated for her beautiful vocals and creative diversity. She will be bringing a set of her favourite songs to share, raising money for the Comox Valley Hospice Society.

Pyper accompanies herself on guitar and banjo, and both instruments beautifully support her sweet, melancholy, and sometimes humourous song choices.

Her debut album received nominations in five categories in the Mpower Independent Music Awards. The title track, Before You Learn To Fly, won Best Song in 2003. She also recorded Taillights in the Rain, and has performed at many Island venues and festivals including Vancouver Island MusicFest.

Members of the Comox Valley Hospice Society will be at the door Aug. 2 to receive cash donations and to answer questions about the many different services they provide to the community to support end-of-life care.

This organization has worked hard over the years to expand its services in order to meet the growing need for palliative care and bereavement support.

Available services include respite care, vigil support, counselling, one-on-one companionship, bed loan program, resources, and advance care planning, as well as healing modalities such as reflexology, healing touch, Reiki, and music therapy.

The Hospice at the Views is a recent facility that offers families another alternative to hospital or at-home care, combining a comfortable residential setting with on-site medical care.

At the core of all CVHS services is the recognition of each person’s dignity and the belief that hospice is not a place, but a philosophy that encourages living every moment as fully as possible.

The evening starts at 7:30 p.m. with an opening set by hosts Judy and Bruce Wing, accompanied by violinist Blaine Dunaway.

There are also door prizes  at the end of the evening.
