Cindy Grant stepped on the runway for the “Fashion with a Heart” event at the 100 Mile House Community Hall on Oct. 25.

A generous crowd turned up for a good cause and cool styles on Oct. 25.

“Fashion with a Heart” raised close to $2,200 for children’s education in the South Cariboo and Central America.

The third annual event saw the latest fashions from local retailers and benefited the Shirley Case School Project and the Just the Basics Success By 6 Campaign.

Shirley Case grew up in 100 Mile House and was killed along with two other aid workers and a driver in 2008 when their SUV was ambushed by Taliban gunmen in eastern Afghanistan. They were working on education and children’s programs in the country with the International Rescue Committee, a New York-based aid group. In memory of her, friends and family organized the Shirley Case School Project, in partnership with SchoolBOX, which has to date built three schools in Nicaragua.

Half of the funds raised in 100 Mile House are going toward constructing a fourth school in that country, explains Case’s sister, Pam Ellis.

A volunteer trip to Nicaragua is scheduled in February and is open to anyone from the community. To get involved, or for more information, visit www.schoolbox.ca/shirleycase.

Ellis spoke to the people in attendance at the 100 Mile Community Hall about her sister.

“Thanks to fundraising events such as this one, we get to honour her spirit in a way that we know she would have been proud of and allow her legacy of humanitarianism to carry on and touch other lives the way that she touched ours.”

Local models hit the runway donning a variety of fashions, including dresses, hockey equipment, pyjamas and hunting gear, from The Log House, Borgo’s Sports Shack, The Outlaw, Class Act Formals and Exeter Sporting Goods.

Success By 6 is a province-wide initiative that funds programs promoting healthy development for young children and families.
