When Mikey, (Michael B. Jordan) becomes single, his two best friends Jason (Zac Efron) and Daniel (Miles Teller) vow to remain single as well. Between hook-ups and dates, it isn’t too long before all three young men find themselves in “that awkward moment,” where a decision needs to be made about where a relationship is going.
We say, “It’s realistic, light-hearted and completely disposable.”
TAYLOR: Everything you need to know about That Awkward Moment is displayed on the poster: Three young men sit pensively together on the couch. One young man is clutching a teddy bear to his chest. One looks like he’s just heard a question that is both baffling and terrifying. One is eating ice cream out of the container. The tag line reads: “When getting some becomes wanting more.” So there you have a perfectly apt review, for what you see is what you get.
HOWE: Oh come on, you know it was far worse than that. I don’t like movies like this, where the men just use women for their own sexual needs and that is what most of this movie is about, getting laid and building up their sex roster. These three guys are meant to be in their mid-20s and they are acting like they are in their mid-teens with their juvenile games.
TAYLOR: That was the point. They are acting out with the libidos of young men, who then learn their lessons about the things that matter in relationships. I don’t really like romantic comedies either, but with that aside, I didn’t find That Awkward Moment too dreadful. Sophomoric, yes. But it didn’t make me roll my eyes, or bore me. I could see a lot of backwards baseball caps in the audience, but didn’t hear a lot of laughter. So the film isn’t busting any blocks to be sure, but all in all, it’s bearable.
HOWE: There were a few good things to come out of this movie. I found that Michael B. Jordan isn’t a bad actor, that it was only torturous for 90 or so minutes, and finally I don’t ever have to watch it again.
