Relive the 80s as Honeymoon Suite brings their brand of hits to the Tidemark Theatre tomorrow, May 7.
Johnnie Dee and Derry Grehan founded Honeymoon Suite in 1982. It was Toronto’s Q107-FM Homegrown Contest (1983) that put them on the map with “New Girl Now” winning the contest. The response was so overwhelming that Bob Roper at WEA Canada immediately signed the band.
Their self-titled debut album hit stores in 1984.
The album went platinum with more than 400,000 units to date in Canada alone. The band’s second album “The Big Prize” (1986), featuring a rare appearance by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, went platinum in Canada and saw Honeymoon Suite’s first real entry into the U.S. market.
A total of 12 albums have produced further notable tracks “Feel It Again”, “Love Changes Everything”, “Lookin’ Out For Number One”, “Still Lovin’ You” and “Long Way.”
Throughout the mid-80s Honeymoon Suite toured both sides of the border, headlining club gigs and opening for such superstars of the era as Billy Idol, Bryan Adams, Heart, and ZZ Top.
Riding a wave of popularity, the band was nominated for the “Most Promising Group” Juno Award (1984) as well as “Group of The Year” (1985) and “Album of The Year” (1985). The band won a gold award for Best Live Act at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo in addition to the Juno Award for Group Of The Year in 1986.
A measure of success south of the border came their way as songs aired on TV’s “Miami Vice” and the movie soundtracks “Lethal Weapon II” and “One Crazy Summer.”
