The Saanich-based Island Illustrators Society are celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary with a fun and captivating exhibition of illustrations showcasing the nation through vintage-style travel posters. The posters are on display for the month of February in the entryway display case of Saanich Municipal Hall and at the Central Saanich branch library in Brentwood Bay.

Icebergs, inukshuks, Bigfoot and the CN Tower are just a small sampling of Canada’s bigger icons.

This month Saanich Municipal Hall is hosting the Big Canadian Stuff-Eh! art show by Saanich-based Island Illustrators Society.

The series of vintage style travel posters celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation, and are visible in the entryway to municipal hall throughout the month.

The posters are designed as a journey across Canada which visits 10 provinces and three territories, said Saanich’s Kristi Bridgeman, artist and spokesperson for the Illustrators.

“The flavour and colours [are] reminiscent of 1930s Canadian travel posters and will feature icons and mascots from every province in the country,” Bridgeman said in the release.

Giant natural and manmade Canadian icons are at the heart of the designs.

Throughout the past 27 years Island Illustrators have created group theme shows on topics ranging from High Tea at the Empress and Christmas at Craigdarroch, to the themed alphabet exhibits from recent years.

Big Canadian Stuff Eh! will be featured at Saanich Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Ave., and also at the Central Saanich branch of the GVPL in Brentwood Bay.

Posters are available to purchase through Coast Collective and through the Island Illustrators Society website islandillustrators.org. The travelling exhibit will also be showcased at Greater Victoria Public Library branches throughout the year. Illustrators will also host free demonstrations at GVPL branches throughout the year, sharing their illustrative techniques.
