We’re already past the half-way mark of the 2017 Safety Meeting concert series. Although we like to keep it fresh with artists that maybe haven’t played in the Cariboo before, this week we have two acts that are back by popular demand this weekend.
I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen Wooden Horsemen, and every time they manage to get the crowd up and dancing within a song or two.
Last summer I had the pleasure of running sound for them on the final afternoon of Tiny Lights festival in Ymir, B.C.
Even in the lull of a hot summer afternoon, when the collective blood sugar of the festival was all but depleted, the Horsemen somehow turned the Ymir Schoolhouse into a swirling mass of dancy good times.
Over the summer the band released a handful of new videos, with summer festival footage cut to head horseman Steve Beddall’s old cassette-recorded demos.
The fact that these songs haven’t really seen the light of day before this blows me away.
It’s a cool new direction for the band, with hints of Mac Demarco or The War on Drugs.
Opening the night is Malcolm Jack, the solo singer songwriter unit behind Dada Plan. Dada Plan closed out the 2016 Safety Meeting season and had us swaying to the beat like wares in a psychedelic butcher-shop window.
His solo record is phenomenal and has earned him some serious praise.

Wooden Horsemen and Malcolm Jack play two nights at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre on March 3 and 4. Tickets are suggested $20, and available at Red Shred’s Bike and Board Shed. The Cariboo Festival Society is providing the bar as a fundraiser for the festival.
