Friday morning saw a new sculpture installed on Columbia Ave.
“V Formation” was created by Nelson artist Nathan Smith for Castlegar Sculpturewalk 2015. The sculpture features seven geese, who with the help of some bike parts, flap their wings and honk when a crank is turned.
Smith’s piece won first place for Artistic Merit and second place for People’s Choice at last year’s Sculpturewalk Gala. Now thanks to the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC), the sculpture will be spending a year in Rossland, in the courtyard outside Mountain Nugget Chocolate.
“It’s nice to see it take flight in a new place,” said Smith, “and have a new life, and have some new viewers who are happy to see it.”
Last year the RCAC leased “Sphere of Influence” by Carl Schlichting, and the piece was such a hit that they’ve arranged to continue leasing it this year. The council also has plans to add another sculpture to Columbia Ave.
“We’re hoping to commission a new sculpture for the Miners’ Hall at some point, and we want to do an interactive one,” said Theshini Naicker of the RCAC. “We’re sort of figuring out the logistics of that. We’re looking at some grant application for that as well.”
This year’s entries for Castlegar Sculpturewalk went up over the weekend and can be found around Castlegar’s downtown. Smith’s new piece, “Bloom,” can be found outside City Hall, and there are plenty of other great pieces to check out.
Once you’ve taken the tour, be sure to let us know which piece you think the RCAC should lease next year, either in the comments or by emailing editor@rosslandnews.com.
