The Tara School of Irish Dancing, together with some of Campbell River’s finest performers, will bring Seat of the High Kings to stage on Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at the Campbell River Baptist Church.
The acoustics, seating and atmosphere at this venue will create an authentic setting for this heart-warming show featuring the music, song and dance of Ireland.
Director Margaret Mullen is delighted that popular singer/songwriter Doug Folkins will host the show as well as entertain with a range of Celtic and East Coast songs. Originally from Sussex, New Brunswick, Folkins has appeared in several of The Tara School of Irish Dancing productions, always bringing another “Celtic Flavour” to the show.
Mullen will also welcome Zephyr Chamber Choir to the production. Zephyr, one of four choirs within the Campbell River Children’s Choir, is directed by Jennifer Abbott and accompanied by Cindy Taylor. Abbott says the Children’s Choir celebrates the joy of music making and the sound of children’s voices joined in song. The choir will bring another dimension of joy and emotion to this stirring production.
Opening with The Seat of the High Kings, the highly-talented dancers will portray the mystery and ancient history of The Hill of Tara, the inauguration site of the High Kings of Ireland. In pre-historic and later times, 142 kings are said to have reined in the name of Tara. In ancient Irish religion and mythology, Tara was revered as a dwelling of the gods and an entrance place to the Otherworld – a land of eternal joy and plenty, where no mortal ever grew old.
Accompanying the dancers in two live music segments will be the Campbellton Celts. The Campbellton Celts are a relatively recent folk music trio featuring North Islanders David Pedersen (on guitar), Stefan Schedler (on banjo and bass) and, hailing from Scotland, Dougie Hunter (on accordion). Combining traditional Celtic tunes with bluegrass rhythms, the Campbellton Celts fuse these musical genres seamlessly. The result is a foot stomping, toe tapping good time that will wear out your dancing shoes!
Seat of the High Kings has universal appeal. Something for everyone and everything for someone … music, song, dance, history, culture … add “Celts” and you have a highly entertaining show the entire family will enjoy.
