Oct. 15-26 – UFV Theatre presents the Canadian premiere of Birdsong this month marking the 100th anniversary of the first ‘digging-in’ of trench warfare on the Western Front. Birdsong is a new adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ best-selling novel by playwright Rachel Wagstaff. Experience the unparalleled tragedy, the remarkable history and surprising humour of the Great War told through songs, music, movement and the magic of theatre from Oct. 15-26 at UFV. Oct. 17/18 – The Chilliwack PieceMakers Quilting Guild presents its quilt show PieceMaking in the Valley 2014 at Chilliwack Alliance Church (8700 Young Rd.) from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There will also be a quilt raffle, merchants’ mall, tearoom, sales table and demos. Admission $5, husbands and children under 12 free.
Oct. 17/18 – Antiques in the Attic returns to the Cultural Centre with Peter Blundell of Blundell Art and Antique Appraisals Oct. 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Cost is $40 per 15-minute sessions, and he will appraise up to three items in each slot, although more detailed items may require a full session for proper inspection. Oct. 17/18 – The Vedder Golden Branch 280 has live entertainment every Friday and Saturday nights. This weekend it’s Whiskey River.
Oct. 18 – Join the Chilliwack Community Arts Council for its inaugural fundraising event, The Pottery Bowl, at The Art Room (20-5725 Vedder Rd.) from 2 to 5 p.m. For $20, patrons will enjoy a bowl of freshly made soup and take the pottery bowl of their choice home with them. These one-of-a-kind bowls have all been handmade by local potters, and many will be glazed by local celebrities. Once you select your bowl, the artist responsible for creating it will be revealed. There will be music, raffles, and a local harvest market on site to add to the festivities. Oct. 20 – Cree artist George Littlechild returns for UFV President’s Lecture Series at the Aboriginal Gathering Place at 4 p.m. Contemporary art tied to rich traditions led Littlechild to craft beautiful creations, but it also opened his eyes to shadows that continue to follow First Nations people today. Littlechild plans to speak about his life’s journey as an artist, as well as social and political issues, with a focus on Canada’s residential school system.
Oct 22 – The 15th annual Chilliwack International Film Series runs every Wednesday (Sept. 24 to Oct. 29) at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas at 7 p.m. Tickets $6 at the door. Tonight’s movie is Calvary; Ireland/UK, drama, 18A, 100 min. A parish priest, despite receiving an oral death threat, continues to comfort his unhappy church members and argue for the value of the church, in this sometimes violent, yet rich, character drama. Director: John Michael McDonagh. Stars: Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd and Kelly Reilly.
Now to Nov. 1 – The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra Chorus has immediate openings and welcomes committed singers whose voices blend well in a group. All singers are expected to attend weekly rehearsals in preparation for both the upcoming Christmas and spring performances. The ability to read music is a requirement. Now to Nov. 1 – Heat, Life, Water is on display in the Art Gallery at the Cultural Centre Sept. 18 to Nov. 1. The show features glass by Karen Ireland, watercolour by Elaine Unrau, and batik (fabric art) by Diane Davidson-Bastien. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, and 6 to 8 p.m. on show evenings.
Now to Nov. 4 – The Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild have their fibre arts show, Tye One On, on display at the Art Room (20-5725 Vedder Rd.) from Sept. 13 to Nov. 4. The show focuses on a beautiful variety of scarves and shawls that celebrate the upcoming fall season. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 604-769-2787.
