Sept. 25 to 28 – The Chilliwack Opera Troupe and the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra present Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Cultural Centre on Thursday, Sept. 25 (7:30 p.m.), Saturday, Sept. 27 (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday, Sept. 28 (3 p.m.). The production, specially adapted for small orchestra, and in English with Sto:lo Nation influences, combines local talent with guest performers from Vienna, Salzburg, Toronto and Victoria. Sept. 27 – Children’s entertainer Will Stroet and his Backyard Band will be at Chilliwack Alliance Church (8700 Young Rd.) for two high-engery family performances today. Will Stroet inspires kids to be active, healthy, creative and engaged in the world through educational music in English and French. Concerts take place at 11 a.m. (English) and 2 p.m. (bilingual). Sept. 27 – Folks in the congregation of Carman United Church will be displaying some of their artistic creations between 7 and 9 p.m. Refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and music will be available throughout the evening. Sept. 29 – The Chilliwack and District Seniors Resources Society presents Wanda’s Tea Dance from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lion’s Hall (45580 Spadina Ave.) with music by Sweet Water. There will be refreshments, door prizes, and a 50/50 draw. Tickets $6 at the door.
Oct 1 – The 15th annual Chilliwack International Film Series runs every Wednesday (Sept. 24 to Oct. 29) at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas at 7 p.m. Tickets $6 at the door. Tonight’s movie is The Railway Man; Australia/UK, drama/biography, 18A, 116 min. The true story of a British soldier who endured gruelling conditions as a forced labourer on “Death Railway” during the Second World War. Director: Jonathan Teplitzky. Stars: Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard.
Now to Sept. 26. – Photographer and writer Margaret Evans presents an exploration of the 50-million year evolution of horses in North America with her solo exhibition Horses From the Mists of Time at the Chilliwack Museum Aug. 9 to Sept. 26. Admission: $3/adults and $2/seniors and students.

Now to Oct. 2 – The Chilliwack Rhythm Reelers will be starting a beginner square dancer class at Greendale elementary (6621 Sumas Prairie Rd.). Classes start at 7 p.m. and run for two hours. The first three Thursday evenings are free: Sept. 18, 25, and Oct. 2. After that, they are $6 per person per night. Teens 19 and under are half-price. Now to Nov. 1 – The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra Chorus has immediate openings and welcomes committed singers whose voices blend well in a group. All singers are expected to attend weekly rehearsals in preparation for both the upcoming Christmas and spring performances. The ability to read music is a requirement. Now to Nov. 1 – Heat, Life, Water is on display in the Art Gallery at the Cultural Centre Sept. 18 to Nov. 1. The show features glass by Karen Ireland, watercolour by Elaine Unrau, and batik (fabric art) by Diane Davidson-Bastien. Opening reception is Saturday, Sept. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, and 6 to 8 p.m. on show evenings.
Now to Nov. 4 – The Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild have their fibre arts show, Tye One On, on display at the Art Room (20-5725 Vedder Rd.) from Sept. 13 to Nov. 4. The show focuses on a beautiful variety of scarves and shawls that celebrate the upcoming fall season. Opening reception is Saturday, Sept. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. which includes spinning and weaving techniques. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 604-769-2787.
