East coast Celtic sound to once again rock the Shady Rest in Oceanside

The Shag Harbour Band will rock out some high energy East Coast tunes at the Shady Rest Pub this weekend.

Their sound is described as East Coast celtic and the Shag Harbour Band is gearing up for a performance this Saturday night at the Shady Rest Pub.

The group rocked the Qualicum Beach pub back in June and have been invited back for a repeat performance of their foot-stomping down home music.

Lead singer and guitar player with the group, Dave Arsenault, is originally from Prince Edward Island and said his six older siblings all played the spirited music before him.

“In my family we grew up listening to and playing music. I have been playing guitar since I was ten,” he said.

Now living in Nanaimo, Arsenault said people love the covers his group plays, like The Rankin Family, Great Big Sea and Stan Rogers, particularly because of all the energy they put into their performances.

The three band members playing at the Shady this weekend include: Arsenault, Shane Dennison from Port Hardy on bass and harmony, and fiddle player Tim Frost from Langford.

Arsenault said even though they all live in different cities on the Island, the trio practices electronically to stay on top of their music.

“We send each other e-mails and then before a show we get together.”

He said they have been together for three years and their fans have called them one of the better celtic bands around these parts.

“We are story tellers. We have no drummer and we are not too loud. You can hear the words we sing.”

The group will play at the Shady Rest Pub in Qualicum Beach from 7 to 10 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 22. There is no cover charge.
