Learn about the remote and exotic location of Sable Island on Wednesday, with photographs and paintings by award-winning pastel artist Joan Larson.
Four years ago Larson embarked on a life changing visit to the East Coast Island, where access is limited and subject to the approval of the Canadian Coast Guard. She took photographs of the wild horses, sandy beaches, sunsets and other wildlife on the island, and created a series upon her arrival back to Errington called the Wild Horses of Sable Island.
“There is something about it that has moved inside of me and is there to stay,” she said. “ The peace and serenity of being in a place so far away from civilization, from being with the wild horses and also in a place without predators.”
She will be doing a slideshow of the photographs followed by an answer and question period at the Arrowsmith Hall, located at the Coombs Fairgrounds, Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m.. She will also have a couple of large framed paintings and some smaller originals and prints.
Larson will be travelling back to Sable Island this summer with documentary film maker Rae-Anne LaPlante, who will be on hand on Wednesday to talk about her upcoming documentary.
The event is free to attend. Larson said she’s had her Sable Island paintings set up in a studio at The Old School House and people are fascinated about the Island, her artwork, the photos and the stories, which is what prompted her to organize this event.
